Darkroom 101 Class
Interested in photography? Whether you’re picking up a new hobby or maybe it’s just been awhile, our Intro to the Darkroom workshop will introduce you to the Darkroom and, by the end of classes, you will feel confident developing your own film! During this three class series, you'll learn everything from best practices and equipment usage to understanding the basic mechanics of fine art printing. We will cover the concepts of the editing and aesthetics. Over three classes, you will develop your film, create contact sheets, discuss the editing process, and ultimately, create your own print. We will start from the beginning and over the course of 3 evenings you’ll take a roll of shot film and develop it, then contact it and finally choose an image to make a final print. We’ll discuss best practices and you’ll leave with an understanding of proper usage of equipment and chemistry. Along the way, we’ll have discussions about aesthetics and choices that are made during exposure, development and printing. The goal of the intro class is for you to feel comfortable and confident in the darkroom!
Class 1(Feb 13 6-8) is all about film developing. Please bring your shot roll of film because you’ll learn the basics of film developing as we go through the process together.
Class 2(Feb 20, 6-8) is an introduction to working in the printing darkroom. You’ll learn proper operation of our Omega D5 enlargers, printing chemistry and leave with a contact sheet of your roll of film.
Class 3(Feb 27, 6-9) is all about printing. We’ll continue our work in the printing room, making sure you leave with at least 1 final 8x10 print of an image you shot. We’ll continue discussions about exposure and contrast control, and end the class session reviewing the entire process and answering any questions you may have.
Classes meet Tuesday, Feb 13 from 6-8, Tuesday, Feb 20 from 6-8 and Tuesday Feb 27 from 6-9
Price for 3 class series(includes a roll of film, darkroom paper, chemistry, and all equipment except a camera): $175 for members, $200 for non-members

Intro to Film Photography
Whether you’re a photographer who is comfortable with digital, or completely new to photography, our Into to Film class will be right up your alley. You will learn about manual cameras, the exposure triangle, films, practical tips, and more during this 5 week session. Class is structured like a shortened college level class, so there will be assignments each week that help reinforce what is learned during class. By the end of the class, you’ll have a good understanding of the variables at play in film photography and know of how to control them. Like all our classes, we believe that technique should serve the photographers vision, so we will work to help you improve your photography, whatever you want to do with it!
Please bring a 35mm film camera to the first class(preferably a manual slr). We have Nikon’s available for rent for the class period, so feel free to reach out to make a reservation.

Nighttime and Long Exposure class
Shooting at night can be one of the most rewarding things in film photography. The darkness can allow you to simplify your vision, but given all the challenges you need to make sure your technique is on point. In this class, you will learn the techniques to make shooting in available darkness a breeze, so you're able to focus all your energy on the creative side. Join LSDR’s Chris Davis(chrisdavisphoto.com) who has spent years shooting both day and night long exposures while experimenting with the limitations of film. You’ll learn about equipment choices, exposures, depth of field, reciprocity, what films to use, color temperatures, using filters for long exposures during the day, and other techniques that allow you to get what you want out of any nighttime(or daytime) scene! As always, the focus will be on letting the creative side guide the technical choices allowing your vision to come through.
Class Requirements: A camera that has a manual mode that allows you to control the shutter speed and aperture, a sturdy tripod and a cable release for your camera. If you do not have a camera that’ll work, please contact us about a rental for the class duration. We have both 35mm Nikon’s and medium format(Mamiya and Hasselblad) cameras that can be rented for the class.
